Notes on GPSR to GPSR Data Transfer
The 12XL supports waypoint data type "D103" in the data transfer protocol.  The Venture supports waypoint data type "D108" and the GPS 76 supports waypoint data type "D109".  "D103" has a 6 character field for the waypoint name. "D108" and "D109" have a zero terminated variable length string (50 char max) for the 10 character waypoint names used in the Venture and GPS 76.  Assuming the newer receivers support the older waypoint name protocols such as "D100"  and "D103", then the Venture and GPS 76 might be able to receive from the 12XL but not vice versa.  So trying the following combinations......

1. GPS 76 to Venture or Venture to GPS 76

I don't know of any command to send data in these units.   So with many of the newer units you probably won't be able to transfer any data between them.

2. Venture or GPS 76 to 12XL

Using the 12XL's command "Request Waypoints", I get "Received invalid waypoint" and no waypoints were transferred.

Using the 12XL's command "Request Track", I get "Transfer Completed".   The 12XL received the track points but, when imported into Mapsource, the track points are not connected. A 128 point "track log" appears as 128 tracks of 1 point each in Mapsource. (The flag in the protocol indicating a new search for satellites is probably always "set".)

3. 12XL to Venture or GPS 76

Using the 12XL's command "Send Waypoints", I get "Transfer Completed".  The waypoint location seems to transfer OK.  Note that there is no altitude data.

Using the 12XL's command "Send Track", I get "Transfer Completed". However.....

3A. If the track log was created by the 12XL so that the name is "Track 001" in Mapsource, then the transfer appears to progress OK - packet count increments - but no points are stored in the Venture or GPS 76.

3B. If the track log was created by the Venture so that the name is "ACTIVE LOG" in Mapsource, then the transfer appears to progress OK - packet count increments - but no points are stored in the Venture or GPS 76.

Before I bought the Venture, Garmin's technical support sent the following to me:
"If you set the 12XL to send waypoints, routes or tracks, the data should be transferred to the Venture. Generally anytime you load track log data it goes into the active log.  I have tried numerous units here with varied amount of track data, it transfers to the active log each time."

I tried # 3A and # 3B shortly after getting the Venture. Number 3A didn't work for me but # 3B (log created by Venture, downloaded to 12XL, and sent to Venture) worked.  It was an earlier version of the firmware so I don't know whether that's the reason or there is some other "magic combination" that results in the transfer working.  Because the protocols the units report as supporting are different, I wouldn't expect it to work.

Note that with the older receivers that support the same protocols, there shouldn't be any trouble transferring data between them.
For instance the GPS 12, GPS 12 XL, GPS 48 and GPS II Plus use "D103".  The GPS 38, GPS 40, GPS 45, GPS 75 and GPS II use "D100".  This is all subject to change depending on the firmware (software) version.
